From the first thoughts that jump into our heads as we wake up to the very last thoughts that fill our minds as we try to fall asleep.

Some of these we notice, some we do not.

We have words thrown at us from every direction. Infiltrating our very thoughts.

Whether we throw on the TV, switch on the radio or just look at our smartphones first thing we start our days with the words of others entering into our reality. If we don’t filter this it can impact on our day, our thinking, our feelings and even our health.

Far too often our thoughts and the words bouncing around inside our heads are to someone else’s agenda. Whether that be our work colleagues, our partners or that of a furtherly detached third party such as those that filter through to us from the mass media or social ecosystems.

If words become thoughts, and if thoughts become feelings, and if these feelings cause chemical reactions to shoot around our bodies, then words can affect our health.

There are some schools of thought that also state that our bodies can become addicted to certain naturally occurring chemicals caused by thoughts and emotions. Good or bad they don’t know the difference. And if so the body can then be seeking to replicate situations whereby that chemical reaction occurred previously. Meaning that if our bodies become addicted to the chemicals that are the result of sadness that it will be predisposed to seek out situations where these reactions can occur again. When this happens the body is controlling the mind and not the other way round.

Whether this is true or not it gives us pause of thought.

We know that when we watch a sad film we get sad, we get those emotions well up inside of us and from what? From a story formed of words, images and sounds that are external to us but that are now affecting us, in very real terms, internally. And we know this is also true of funny films, scary movies, music and so on.

So why should this be any different when it is the mass media, social media or digital ecosystems we engage with.

People are said to touch their smartphones over 2k times a day. Think about that.

How many words, stories, thoughts and ultimately agendas of others are infiltrating into our minds? And how is that affecting our thoughts, feelings and so on.

In fact, they are paramount.

The words we choose to speak, listen to and tell ourselves shape the narratives of our lives and the lives around us. Words and the narratives they form shape society and indeed the world.

Through your words, I have a window into your world and far too often your words betray your inner secrets.

I can use your words to market to you. To sell you an idea and to get inside your mind.

Words and cutlery separate us from the animals.

Words form inside our minds and shape our story.

Sometimes our words are used to build others up, and sometimes to knock them down. Sometimes they are used wisely and all too often they betray us.

We only seem to remember the negative ones and so seldom the positive. And if we can become metacognitive enough to really stop and watch the words that form our thoughts, we can gain real insight into our own inner world and how it is influenced by the stories, narratives and words of that outside of us.

Words are the most powerful marketing and communication tool and yet one of the hardest to analyze as they are more often qualitative, not quantitative, and subjective at best and downright confusing at worst.

Yet if I can understand the words that are floating around inside your head and how they shape your personal story. And if I can extrapolate that out and understand how they affect people around you in your society and people that are like you. If I can start to understand their stories. If I can soak in these stories and extrapolate them out into a narrative, a movement or the voice of a social group, network or community I can learn enough about you to influence your story and that of your community. If I do this on a large enough scale, I can shape societal narratives and influence change. And I can do this to suit my agenda not yours.

If I use social listening and social network analysis tools, I can find the most influential people in a social group or network and I can seek to influence them and they in turn you.

And I can do this all from the information, data and conversations you so willingly share on social media, in networks and within society.

So, you might say to me “I have nothing to hide” but I would ask you from whom do you think you would be hiding and whom do you think might be looking to know you?

I could be a marketer, a hacker, a national security agent, a bad actor from a foreign state, a bad actor from a local threat, I could be big business, political technologist, mass media, conman, fraudster or data scientist, a troll, a stalker or any and all of the above and you give me free access to enough data to influence you and those around you.

I would ask you to watch how you respond to that statement. Watch what words pop into your mind and ask yourself where they came from. Are they your thoughts? Or are they the thoughts of your society? Your upbringing? The media you read? Can you honestly say that any thought is of totally original independent decent?

Try thinking without words. Go ahead try it.

Truly thinking, not being vacant or absent-minded, but truly thinking through something without a single word popping into your head. Its almost impossible. And how long before your train of thought takes you somewhere you didn’t know you wanted to or intended to go?

If we really stop to think about the words that influence and make up our story, we can question the narratives that shape our lives and the external forces that shape our story.

When we start to question “the very story of me” we start to open a world of influence that we had never really noticed was there in the first place. When we do this, we can touch freedom and greatness and we can see how we can positively affect not only our own lives but that of others around us.

To understand this, we need to also delve deeper into how we are behaviorally targeted by those looking to be masters of our destiny and shape our narratives, our stories for us so that we can take ownership of this process off them and into our own hands.

I was fascinated as a child about how adults could hold a conversation where the other person started to speak almost as soon if not before the other person had finished their sentence and it soon became obvious to me that each person was just poised waiting to speak. But the other thing that fascinated me was how wrong or cross wired conversations would get because it was as if each person had not heard what the other had actually said.

Quite often after such get togethers I would ask my mom questions about the conversation that would usually shock her to my level of understanding about what they were talking about. Or often I could point out where the other person had misunderstood her point of view even though she had stated it clearly. This was not because I was a super intelligent child, I soon realised that I was the only person in the room actually listening to the other people because I was the only person in the room not waiting to speak.

Later in life as I have delved in to NLP and psychology, I have realised that each person has an internal voice going on nattering away and quite often rehearsing their side of the conversation or argument which quite often makes it hard for them to fully hear what you have just said. Also through our perceptual filters we tend to delete, distort or generalise in our own minds what people say and do. This is the very reason police look to interview so many witnesses of a crime.

Taking all the above into account I would like you to ask yourself “when was the last time you really actively listened to someone and the words they are saying?” When did you stop and pay someone your full attention whilst not just waiting to talk?

It’s an interesting is a skillset many, if not most, people today seem to be lacking. But if you truly listen to someone and listen to the wording, they use then you gain really understanding of not only what they are saying but also how they are saying and most importantly why. With this information we can shape our responses, our follow up arguments or suggestion in such a way that they really engage the person. It gives you access into their mind set and gives you all the clues you need to fully engage them and set about persuading them to your line of thinking.

Social Listening

In digital marketing there is a technique and a set of tools called “Social Listening” this is where we gather and analyse data on what is being said about a certain subject or brand.

This is a real a powerful tool for any digital marketing analysts or social media manager to get to grips with and understand. If you combine this with sentiment analysis and linguistic analysis you can see how positive or negative people are being and use this information to shape a campaign around this. In online reputation management this should be a key tool. It helps to stay ahead and address any bad online feedback you may be getting but was previously unaware.

We can also use this to ensure the tone, language and context of your message is right for your customers or readers but also differentiates you from the competition. Here linguistic analysis and tools for webscraping are crucial.

But if you haven’t come across it here is a brief description of what it is an example of how it can be used. You can then play around with it until it becomes something that is just naturally part of who you are, how you interact with people and how you think through problems.

What is a Frame?

Consider it this way. A literal frame is a border, usually around a picture that helps to set out how you see the image within. Depending upon the frame chosen can change the way that image is interpreted and understood. It is also used to draw focus on a particular image and way of looking at the image the artist or collector wants you to see. So that they can aid you in seeing it the way they do.

Another person might own a copy of exactly the same image but chose a completely different frame and place for it, because they see it differently.

In NLP we will talk about people maps of reality. How we all filter, distort and generalise what we see based on these maps that support our worldview.

This worldview will, in part, define our frames of reference on situations, experiences and decisions in life.

What is reframing?

Well going back to the literal analogy. If we were to reframe the picture and hang it somewhere else we and others might start to see things differently.

In behavioural economics and in neurolinguistics we talk about reframing peoples point of view to help them make better decisions, affect behavioural change or to get them to see things differently.

But how do you reframe a point of view?

Well first off you need to understand everyone's point of view and reference point. So unlike in a lot of debate we see in the world today we need to learn to listen and be flexible. Active listening is a skill we will look at in future articles.

In NLP we say that those with the most flexibility control the outcome. By that we mean those who can let the conversation develop and go in several different directions including ones where we concede on some points will mean be can ultimately get the desired result. If we are too fixed and can not see it from the other person's point of view then we have less ability and chance of persuading them differently.

Also by developing NLP skills and listening to people, we can start to see the fundamental building blocks of someones thought and language patterns. If we can then reframe our argument in their language patterns we have more chance of triggering a new way of looking at things.

In the below clip from before the flood, the former president of the United States shows great skill in this when he addresses the issue of climate change in a language that climate change deniers might identify with, that of security and economy. This shows great skill in seeing both sides and knowing what would appeal to those that might be of an opposing view.

In reframing and reframing perspective is everything. As the below Ted Talk by

Rory Sutherland demonstrates. If we can change or reframe peoples perspectives we can bring not only better results but give them a feeling of satisfaction also.

How often do we see people talking at cross purposes? Quite often about the same subject and even appearing to agree on the points or issues but somehow seem to not understand each other. What’s happening here? Well, often it can be a little as having a different worldview or map or talking from and hearing from a different representational system.

Next time you are talking with someone, and they don’t seem to be understanding you, if you can’t tell because you are talking at odds, it's often easy to tell by their body language, you know when their face says “eh?” Try when this happens to listen out to how they are talking, the words they are using and see if you are at a mismatch, then try changing your language to match theirs, subtly of course.

Often our external communication output is a result of our observation and internal processing of the external behaviour of others as theirs is of ours. However, in today’s society, we appear to have lost the art of listening and are too often just waiting for our turn to speak. Even if we say something as simple as “I know what you mean when I went on holiday I found…” we have just changed the conversation to be about your agenda and not theirs. This is fine if we are trying to control the conversation but if we are truly trying to understand what the person is saying we need to learn to listen, quiet the internal voice and just listen to what the other person has to say.

The rules of conversation should be your turn my turn when you have finished. Trying to avoid jumping in to soon can improve our communications skills and simple conversation encourages can help people open up to us in ways we would not experience otherwise.

After all, if we could read and understand our own maps and those of others we could perhaps redirect them to more favourable outcomes.

Well, the great news is we can learn these maps. If we think about thinking, yes I know how that sounds, but if we consider how we think and how we figure out the world and our experiences on a conscious level it's in words. Would it be too far a stretch to imagine then that one of the keys to understanding our thought processing and our programming might be the words we use to describe the world, our feelings and thoughts?

In fact, we can go one step further if we consider how our thoughts can lead to us having a feeling or emotion, positive or negative. We can understand how our emotions can affect our physiology, because of the chemicals that are sent through or neurological system, we can then see how compelling and insightful it can be to understand the language of our neurology and psychology.

In NLP the representational systems are known as VAKOG and these in part help us by giving us tool that we can use to gain an insight into our own and other people map.

VAKOG stands for:

Visual - sight, image, colour, brightness, darkness

Auditory – sound, noise, loud, quiet, soft tone, deep

Kinaesthetic – Feeling, touch, wam, hotm cold, heavy, rough

Olfactory – Smell, scent, odour

Gustatory – taste, bitter, sweet

If you ever hear someone say that they are a very visual person, then they have probably read some NLP or something similar, and quite often their not.

There are sublevels of these, but for ease, this is the top level representational system.

These affect the way we take in information, how we process it through thought and then how we express ourselves. The important rule to remember that a person is not one or the other, so not just a visual person for example, but we are all a mixture of these representational systems.

We tend to favour one system or another, and we quite often use the language we favour for the things in life we like and enjoy, and the language that we favour less for the things that oppose our worldview, or we do not like.

Our own internal processing

If we listen carefully to our own internal voice, we can soon start to see patterns in the way we talk to ourselves about the things we do and do not like. A way of reframing our view of the world would be to change our language around it to one we favour, if it something we want, or language we disfavour, for something we want to avoid or stop doing.

Understanding others

The way other communicate with us when they speak can, if we listen carefully, give us an idea of their representational system and view of the world. So if we want to elicit a change in them we can look at reframing their viewpoint by changing the words they use or by talking to them in the language which fits their worldview, their map of reality and their representational system.

We all experience the world through our senses. After all, we have nothing else to experience it with. These senses and experiences become our maps they become our reality.

Through hearing, sight, feeling, smell and taste we experience this reality, but we are all receiving so much data at one time, some say hundreds of thousands of pieces of data all at once, that we could not possibly take it all in.

For our minds to cope, we filter this information out be generalising, distorting or deleting bits of information often bits of information that do not fit our maps of reality. This is the reason that police officers will interview multiple eyewitnesses who often give many different versions of events, its not because some are lying it's because each person genuinely experienced the incident and took in the information differently.

Why is this important? Well in NLP we know this and we know that the keys to understanding someone else's map are through a study of their neuro-linguistic programming, the language of their psychology and physiology.

If we are aware of this, we can see how through NLP therapy we could remap our filters of the world by changing the neurological language of our programming. That sounds complicated and to be honest, some of it can be, hence the reason for the last 6 years of study, but the first step is identifying our language around a subject or issue we are dealing with.

If we understand this, we can understand how we might approach our maps of the world when it comes to insomnia and sleep behaviour.

If we redesign our maps we can change our reality.

If we help people redesign their maps we help change their world.
