Distracted

The world is spiralling out of control. We are entering into corporate colonialism with big tech running the show. With every man, woman, child and others on the planet is the very product sold on the open market. With every keystroke, every like and every email bits of data are stored up on a cloud somewhere in the stratosphere only to never rain down on the parched lands below. Segmentation. Polarisation. Segregation. Identity politics is weaponised. Censorship is weaponised by the cult of conspiracy and bad actors take your cash in good faith that you will not look too deeply into the details. The con is on my friends and you are the conned. As am I. We are tweaked, nudged and pushed around by big data and behavioural science and we don’t even know it, see it or understand it. Forget 1984 and think Brave New World and you will get somewhere close to the meaning. Albeit I have read neither, I know the concepts. And we are entertained to distraction and become so distracted we don’t notice the temperature rising in the cooking pot, instead, we just snuggle in deeper. Science is a doctrine but it’s the best we have at times and yet people don’t want to see the evidence that is put before their eyes even if it will save their lives. They would prefer for things just to stay the way they are and stay in their ignorant little shells. Never really stepping outside to test the waters, to take the temperature of what is really going on. No, it is not some big conspiracy theory. There is no group of lizard men sat in dark rooms smoking cigars and planning your incarceration, as far as I know. But the high school geek is making his first trillion off the back of your data. Off the back of your personal, drab and uninteresting life. And you just go along with it because you figure it is better than the alternative. Better than taking action. Better than doing that bit of work, better to put the dishes in the washer than wash them by hand because you are very busy being distracted by life passing you by. But that is ok. As you draw your last breath on your death bed and you look round at your loved ones who are glued to their phones and barely notice your demise at least you will know you didn’t waste your life. You didn’t spend it being distracted by nature, saving the planet, fighting a cause of changing lives. No, you were smart. You spent it expanding your mind with YouTube, in raging arguments with trolls of Facebook and twittering incoherently.
