The 2020 election was marked by severe political divisions, a public health crisis, unease about the voting process, concerns about… Some interesting data here; whilst most Americans surveyed seem to believe they had enough information to make a decision during the recent US election 4 in 5 felt they had been exposed to misinformation. This is no surprise to us it is a sign of a change in awareness to some, if not all, of the problem we are tackling today. All free countries should be looking to tackle the rise of misinformation and foreign interference both technically and through education to the people and through our school systems. https://www.facebook.com/103626624451616/posts/232023038278640/

Two years ago, complaints against real time bidding (RTB) were lodged by Jim Killock of Open Rights Group, Michael Veale of UCL, and Johnny Ryan. “WHAT’S THE ISSUE WITH RTB? Every time you visit a website, hundreds if not thousands of hidden trackers are taking note of what we do, read and watch. Your browising history and profile data is then shared all across the globe, and sold in auctions where countless advertisers and middlemen can access our data and bid for their adverts to be shown in the websites we visit. It is worth noticing that this information is collected and traded away without any security in place. Dodgy intermediaries could participate to an auction with no intention to bid or to show you adverts, but only to grab your data and use it for any reason they like — such as to manipulate your political views, check your compliance with coronavirus restrictions, or track protesters of the Black Lives Matter movement. It is little surprising then that RTB must rely on coercion (cookie walls) and deception (dark patterns) to gain your consent. Who would ever say yes to advertising under these terms?” https://www.facebook.com/103626624451616/posts/230296751784602/

You could be forgiven for thinking the government has treated the pandemic as an opportunity to reward its friends, says researcher Sophie Hill The Tories have undoubtedly seen this pandemic as an opportunity. An opportunity to exploit the system and the good will of the people in order to line the pockets of their friends and dismantle parts of the NHS "It’s remarkable that the government has managed to squander so much goodwill so quickly – all while paying huge sums to PR firms to work on their messaging strategy." https://www.facebook.com/103626624451616/posts/217156946431916/

Tories bought tools to work out voters’ race and religion before 2019 election. “This really should be headline national news. 10,000,000 people racially profiled without consent by the UK Conservative Party. Buried on page 11 of 21 of an ICO audit of the parties use of data.” https://www.facebook.com/103626624451616/posts/216779179803026/

Saturday contemplation: Life feels too much sometimes. Covid, US elections, Brexit, Lockdown 2.0, climate change, racial injustice, hatred and bigotry pushed on the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 community. It needs to stop. We need to take a breath and ask “what is really going on here?” When did fake news, conspiracy theory and misinformation get taken as gospel by so many? The divisions which are propagated and propelled forward by the attention economies of global tech platforms need to be acknowledged and addressed. We need to first acknowledge their existence, their impact in and on our lives and then build strategies to overcome them. To educate others and start building a movement for change. @tristanharris and @centerforhumanetechnology state it like this “As long as social media companies profit from outrage, confusion, addiction, and depression, our well-being and democracy will continue to be at risk.” Don’t just be the change in the world influence it. @ajlunited the Algorithmic Justice League shows how coded bias is affecting the lives of marginalized groups. We need to somehow get a grip on that to move forward as a society. We need to acknowledge our addiction and dependence on this technologies. Acknowledging we have a problem is the first part. We then need to start learning to use them to our advantage and holding them accountable for what they are doing in society. Yes Twitter and Facebook are suppressing the false tweets and accusations of the current occupant of the White House, and that’s a start. But that is too little too late for many. Start the journey, take back control. Saturday contemplation: Life feels too much sometimes.
