Saturday contemplation: Life feels too much sometimes. Covid, US elections, Brexit, Lockdown 2.0, climate change, racial injustice, hatred and bigotry pushed on the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 community. It needs to stop. We need to take a breath and ask “what is really going on here?” When did fake news, conspiracy theory and misinformation get taken as gospel by so many? The divisions which are propagated and propelled forward by the attention economies of global tech platforms need to be acknowledged and addressed. We need to first acknowledge their existence, their impact in and on our lives and then build strategies to overcome them. To educate others and start building a movement for change. @tristanharris and @centerforhumanetechnology state it like this “As long as social media companies profit from outrage, confusion, addiction, and depression, our well-being and democracy will continue to be at risk.” Don’t just be the change in the world influence it. @ajlunited the Algorithmic Justice League shows how coded bias is affecting the lives of marginalized groups. How big data and AI is not “unbiased” as it claims as its coded by straight white men for straight white men who may not even realise their deep in built biases. In the UK @openrightsgroup monitors and fights for your rights for digital freedom, free from surveillance and data harvesting and manipulation. Check out the work of some of these groups. These are just some of the organizations and people fighting for your digital freedom. All of the issues above are being affected by the polarization caused by social media and big tech companies. We need to somehow get a grip on that to move forward as a society. We need to acknowledge our addiction and dependence on this technologies. Acknowledging we have a problem is the first part. We then need to start learning to use them to our advantage and holding them accountable for what they are doing in society. Yes Twitter and Facebook are suppressing the false tweets and accusations of the current occupant of the White House, and that’s a start. But that is too little too late for many. Start the journey, take back control. Saturday contemplation: Life feels too much sometimes. Top expert says Biden taking pandemic ‘seriously’, leading spokesman for president to accuse doctor of political bias You need to vote him out, he whose name is not even worth speaking as to do so just adds to his “Branding” The US needs a president that takes this pandemic seriously. That doesn’t name call and blame others but steps up, take firm action and takes responsibility. I am far from a conservative but in the UK, as much as I despise the man and what he represents, Boris is at least doing something. Albeit late. But he is doing something and all through his government has provided support to those whose jobs are at risk and more. Has it been perfect? Far from it. Has it been free from corruption, deceit or ineptitude? No quite the opposite. But I appreciate this is a very challenging situation to try to manage and try to do the right thing. But one of the simplest things to do is to acknowledge it, warn people about how serious it is and take some kind of action. He who shall not be named can’t even do that. And now he has the blood of hundreds of thousands of lives on his hands. If you haven’t already vote. And vote him out. #vote https://www.facebook.com/103626624451616/posts/210325700448374/

A Russian disinformation campaign designed to undermine and spread fear about the Oxford University coronavirus vaccine has been exposed by a Times investigation.Pictures, memes and video clips This will never stop. Fake news and propaganda are a way of the world now and we need to learn to utilize our sense making and critical thinking skills to analyze what comes before us. Especially on social media and even from our friends and family who may repost (albeit innocently) something that comes from a rogue source. #FakeNews https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/russians-spread-fake-news-over-oxford-coronavirus-vaccine-2nzpk8vrq https://www.facebook.com/103626624451616/posts/206131390867805/

United Kingdom, 2020 AD.

United Kingdom, 2020 AD. Algorithms decide so much about our lives that we are not even aware of. You might not think this important until one affects your life. Not knowing how the decisions are made and with what bias it was written is just part of the problem. It’s only when algorithmic decisions affect a lot of people lives, like in the exam debacle in the UK, that it comes on the radar. Under current UK law you can, under GDPR, take action to “not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing.” And because of this Ofqual, who regulate education in the UK, has to take quick and direct action to solve the exam results fiasco. However, please do not sit too comfortably; as the UK comes under more pressure with Brexit looming and negotiations underway this government is also considering loosening the UK internet and data protection laws in a deal with the US. A deal where GDPR will potentially be scrapped. https://www.openrightsgroup.org/blog/how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-the-algorithm/ https://www.facebook.com/103626624451616/posts/201031838044427/
